Fluorescent lights are being banned soon!

Yes it's true. Much like the halogen light bulbs that start being phased out a few years ago, fluorescent lights are also being phased out and by September 2023 you won't be able to buy any more fluorescent light bulbs and your electrician will be installing only new LED lights. 

We should all be moving over to new LED lighting and properly disposing of the old fluorescent light bulbs. Did you know 1 fluorescent tube can contaminate up to 30,000 litres of water if disposed of incorrectly?

Has your small job electrician gone AWOL?

The answer is no! 

I've been a bit slow with correspondence and not answering phone calls as swiftly as I should but there's good reason! I'm not on paternity leave after my first baby came 3 weeks early. 

Fear not! Your small jobs such as fuseboard upgrades, and replacement lights are still being carried out by our other electrician, Josh. He's been holding the fort whilst I've been catching up on sleep. 

Smoke alarms in your home

So many times when viewing jobs I see no smoke alarms, or battery smoke alarms with no battery in and it amazes me that such an easy fix that could potentially save a life, hasn't been carried out!

As homeowners, there's currently no requirement for you to have any form of fire detection in your home but a lot of people will have 1, maybe 2 battery powered smoke alarms. Rarely is there maintenance carried out on these alarms.

Using the correct types of cable

As electricians, we need to properly design a circuit and use materials that are suitable for it's location. Regulations change which means a few years ago the circuit may have been designed differently. A common difference is the use of grey PVC cable for outside wall lights i.e. decorative lights or flood lights. You'll often see a small amount of grey cable coming straight out of the wall and in to the back of a light.

I've been tied about what I should create a blog about and I had a couple of options lined up, one on LED lighting where I was going to talk about the benefits on replacing halogens for LED and talk a bit about how LED lights work with an LED driver, another idea was to talk about RCD protection and why upgrading your fuseboard to include RCBOs and possibly a surge protective device is a great thing to do.
