Why do I need a different type of cable outside?
As an electrician in Corsham, Chippenham and West Wiltshire, I get to visit a lot of houses and therefore a lot of different installations. Quite commonly in older properties where the installation is around 25+ years old, the electrics like outside lighting, shed electrics or summerhouse electrics tend to be supplied from a type of cable that isn't suitable to be used outside.
The cable we use inside your home isn't UV rated. That means Ultra-Violet rays can damage the sheath of the cable if they are exposed. When you use a cable outside that is only suitable for being used being used outdoors, it will get damaged by the suns UV rays. Depending on the amount of sun it sees obviously determines how quickly the insulation of the cable degrades. If the cable is particularly old and get's a lot of sun, You can see that it starts to crack and become very brittle. Eventually the insulation will fall off and leaving the bare copper exposed which if touched, can kill.
As a local and reputable electrician in the Corsham area I only use the good quality materials that are suitable for the job in hand. It may make it slightly more expensive but you can sleep easy knowing the installation is done properly and that it was installed to last.
