Home Re-wires

Home Re-wires
By Haydon the Electrician | Watt & Co. Electrical Ltd.

Why re-wire your home?

If your home is more than 35 years old, or you're planning a renovation, it's worth checking if your electrical installation meets the latest regulations and if it doesn't, it's worth considering a full home re-wire. Outdated wiring can be inconvenient with too few sockets or in the wrong locations but it can also be dangerous. In this post, I’ll walk you through when a rewire might be needed, how the process works, what it costs, and how to know what’s right for your home.

What Does a Rewire Involve?
Rewiring a house is a big job, but it’s usually done in two clear stages: first fix and second fix.

The first fix is the messy work that ends up being hidden — installing new cables, cutting channels into walls, lifting floorboards, and fitting the back boxes for your sockets and switches. This stage is completed before any plastering or decorating is done and is definitely the most disruptive part of the job.

Once that's finished, the re-wire continues with second fix. This is where we fit the switches, sockets, lights, and connect everything to the new fuseboard. Before making it all live we also test all the circuits to ensure they're all safe and issue a certificate. We also notify building control on your behalf!

FAQs About Home Re-wires

Do I have to rewire the whole house?
Not always. If the existing wiring is in good condition and meets current regulations, we may only need to update certain parts that are outdated like lighting circuits with no earth wire.

Can I do a rewire myself?
Technically yes, but it’s not advised unless you’re a qualified electrician. DIY electrical work must be inspected and signed off by your local authority building control.

FAQs About Watt & Co. Electrical Ltd.
Are you a registered electrician?
Yes. We are registered with NAPIT and our registration number is 52682.

Do you work in occupied homes?
Absolutely. We’ll always work around you to keep disruption to a minimum, and can offer flexible scheduling, occupied re-wires do cost more and on some occasions it's cheaper for you to take a short break away than pay the additional costs of staying at home!

Do you only do full rewires?
No — we handle everything from small upgrades to full rewires, consumer unit replacements, and electrical inspections. We're 'full scope' domestic electricians.

How can I get a quote?
You can call us or use the website contact form. We always give a ball-park figure for re-wires before a site visit to ensure we're within your budget for the work.
