Home Re-wire in Bath - How we re-wired a period property.

By Haydon the Electrician

We’ve recently completed a full home re-wire in Bath, and I thought it would be helpful to walk you through what’s involved — especially if you live in an older property and are wondering what rewiring really looks like in practice.

This particular job was a full rewire of a 3-bed period townhouse just off London Road, near Morrisons. A tall and relatively slim property, it’s a fairly typical Bath terrace — and like many homes in the city, it needed some work to bring the electrics up to standard. In this case the client opted full re-wire because they planned on being in the property long term.

As a long-standing electrician in Bath, I’ve worked in lots of similar homes, and while rewires might seem fairly straightforward on the surface, there’s always more going on behind the scenes than you might think.

What Made This Home Re-Wire in Bath Easier (and What Didn’t)
The property was mostly empty (the clients had just bought it and had their stuff in storage), which makes a big difference to the speed and ease of a rewire. The new owners were having a lot of refurbishment work done — carpets were being replaced, decorating happeneing etc. This meant we could get stuck in without worrying too much about protecting the flooring the way we normally would.

That said, there were still challenges! The house is right on the corner by Morrisons, which meant unloading tools and materials was a bit of a mission. As every electrician in Bath knows, parking and access in the city can sometimes be half the battle.

Our Rewire Process – From Top to Bottom

We always aim to work in an efficient manner (and anyone that has been through our booking system would see that) and with as little disruption as possible. In most home re-wires in Bath, including this one, we start from the top of the house and work our way down.

Why? Because when we’re wiring the sockets upstairs, we can also wire the lighting for the floor below at the same time. This method saves time beause we're not double handling items. If we did it circuit by circuit then we'd constantly be re-lifting floorboards and drilling new holes.

What Does a Home Re-Wire Include?
This re-wire was a pretty basic spec to begin with, just a few sockets per room and a standard pendant in the rooms. The spec changed shortly after the project started though with extras such as wall lights, bed side light switches and lights, outside lights etc.

When quoting a project like a re-wire, we always make future-proofing recommendations, such as running an EV charger cable to the driveway and putting in hardwired internet points or access points. We can also install CCTV too!

As part of any home re-wire in Bath, we’ll also update any 'bonding' (helpsheet on my website which explains what bonding is) and the replace fuseboard with a new RCBO fuseboard. Everything electrical will be new.

How Long Does a Rewire Take?
This project took about two weeks from start to finish. The exact time depends on the size of the house, how easy access is, whether it is occupied or not along many other factors.

Why Rewire a Period Property?
Older homes in Bath often still have original wiring hidden behind newer sockets and fittings — meaning what looks okay on the surface can actually be outdated and unsafe.

Signs you might need a home re-wire in Bath include:

Black rubber or fabric wiring

No RCD protection on your fuseboard

Light switches or sockets that spark or feel loose

Extension leads everywhere due to not enough sockets

Flickering lights or circuits that trip often

If you’re unsure, we offer electrical safety checks and can provide honest advice on whether a rewire is needed or if a partial update will do.

Final Thoughts
This home re-wire in Bath went smoothly thanks to good access, a clear plan, and great communication with the homeowners. Every rewire is different, but starting from the top and working methodically down helps us deliver high-quality results that are neat, safe, and built to last.

If you’ve got an older property and you’re not sure whether your wiring is safe, or you’re planning a renovation and want to future-proof your electrics, get in touch.
