Fusebox upgrades Myths and Misconceptions Pt. 2
Misconception 1: Fuseboard upgrades are just a sales tactic
Maybe for some less reputable electricians around Bath and West Wiltshire this might be true. If you find a good registered electrician that you can trust and they tell you a fuseboard upgrade is required is required then you should take their word for it! The fuseboard is almost the hub of electrical safety in your home. Not only does it contain switches that prevent cables getting overloaded and becoming a fire hazard, but your RCD's will also be at the fuseboard and n RCD is effectively used as a device for saving life in the event of an electric shock. If you don't have RCD protection you should really look at having your fusebox upgraded.
Misconception 2: A fusebox upgrade is a messy and disruptive job
If the your fusebox isn't being re-located then it's a pretty standard job. Any mess is limited to the immediate area of the fuseboard so if your fuseboard is in a hallway then your hallway might be a bit cluttered for most of the day! There's not a huge amount of disruption either, apart from having the electrics disconnected that is....Your power will be off for a good few hours and then it may be in and out whilst further electrical testing is carried out.
Misconception 3: Upgrading my fuseboard means I need a full re-wire
It's actually almost the opposite of that. People are often told because their electrics are old then they need a full re-wire when in a lot of cases simply having a fuseboard upgrade will bring most of the installation up to standards and make it fine for continued use for years to come. If you're buying a house and it will be your 'forever home' then it might be worth considering a re-wire if your budget allows as replacing the fusebox doesn't fix any potential future faults with the existing old wiring!
