My oven is fusing my house! What do I do?
In all my time as an electrician carrying out small electrical jobs in Bath and West Wiltshire, only twice have I ever come across a cooker that was tripping the electrics for a reason that WASN'T a faulty oven element, so if your cooker is tripping your electrics or 'Fusing' the electrics every time you try to use it then it's almost definitely a faulty element.
Faulty oven elements will often buckle so visually they would look deformed. Faulty oven elements could also crack and you'd be able to see a white substance inside. Looking at the photo of the faulty oven element below we can see the deformed part of the element on the upper left hand side and the cracks at the top.
Some times your oven might stay on for a little while before tripping the electrics. This is a sign that your oven element has a minor crack, as the element heats up from use the metal expands and the crack get's larger until it starts shorting out and tripping the RCD/fusing your house.
Replacement oven elements are a much more cost effective solution than a brand new oven. Depending on the model and which oven element has blown, a new element can be as little as £20!
