HELP - Why are my electrics tripping?!
There are so many reasons that the electrics in your home could be tripping the fusebox.
When I say 'tripping', what I mean is the electrical switches or fuses at your consumer unit are not staying up. You might have heard other people saying their whole house is 'fusing'.
Here's a few common reasons why a Domestic Electrician in Corsham might be called out to carry out electrical fault finding in your home when your fusebox won't stay on.
- Rural homes in villages like Box, Colerne, Marshfield, Lacock etc are often subject to the intrusion of rodents and the little blighters LOVE chewing on electrical wiring in your home. I had one recently where I had to install new wiring to an outside light in Chippenham after a rodent had chewed through some of the wiring. Often these trips can be completely random which makes it difficult to identify where the issue lies. After a few visits and some electrical testing the faulty lengths of cable are usually found.
- Damp walls in your home can also cause issues with tripping. Over time the damp in walls will corrode the back boxes of your electrical sockets and eventually the internals of your sockets will corrode and begin causing tripping issues. The easiest fix for this sort of electrical fault is to simply have a replacement socket installed and the old faulty one removed. Unfortuantely though over time the same issue will come back so it's better to replace the metal back box with a plastic back box to prolong the life of the accessory.
- Loose connections, when particularly bad, can short out between the wires. With bigger wattage items like an electric shower, a loose connection can become something called a 'high resistant joint'. These high resistance joints will start sparking and get so hot they melt the insulation around the wires. Eventually the wires will start fusing and the trips at your fuseboard won't stay on.
- DIY electrical work is by far one of the most common reasons your electric won't stay on. Many DIYers will have a go at replacing a light fitting on their own and often get the wires mixed up so when the electrics are switched on, or the new light fitting is switched on it fuses the whole fuseboard and trips all the electric out. Stick to using a professional electrician to replace your new light fittings and sockets.
- Water ingress is a really common issue and can cause your electrics to start tripping. If your electrics start tripping during or after rain then it's most likely water that has got in to an an outside socket or some outside light fittings. Tripping electrics when it's raining is more susceptible if you have lots of garden or driveway lights due to connectors being buried underground.
Faulty oven elements are another reason for tripping electrics. Sometimes if an element is 'on it's way out' it will stay on for a short while before tripping the RCD due to rising earth leakage. Other times and most often, when the oven element fails it will produce a crack in the outer metal and start fusing against the internal wire. Thanksfully oven elements are usually a relatively quick and easy fix.
There are other reasons why your electrics might be tripping but the 6 above are the most common reasons I see home electrics tripping out the fuseboard.
